How do I know if I need cabinet refinishing?

Refinishing is the right call when the cabinets are sound but the finish is not. It is the wrong call when the boxes themselves are failing.

Refinishing usually makes sense if:

• The boxes and doors are solid and the layout works for you.
• The finish is dated, yellowed, or worn around the handles and above the stove.
• You want a colour change rather than a new kitchen.

Replacement is probably the better answer if:

• Boxes are water damaged, sagging or coming apart.
• Doors are delaminating rather than just worn.
• The layout is what you actually dislike — refinishing will not change that, and a beautiful finish on a kitchen that does not work is money badly spent.

How do you approach cabinet refinishing?

Assessing whether refinishing is the right call

Refinishing suits cabinets that are structurally sound but dated or worn. If the boxes are failing, the doors are delaminating, or the layout is the actual problem, we will say so rather than take the job — a beautiful finish on failing cabinetry is money badly spent.

Removal, labelling and degreasing

Doors and drawer fronts come off and get labelled so everything returns to where it started. Kitchen cabinetry carries years of cooking grease, and every bit of it has to come off before any coating goes near it. Finish adhesion lives or dies here.

Sanding and priming for adhesion

Existing finishes get scuffed or stripped depending on what is on them, then primed with a product chosen to bond to that specific surface. Factory finishes, older varnish and previously painted cabinets each need a different approach.

Spraying rather than brushing

Doors and fronts are sprayed in a controlled setup to get an even, factory-smooth finish. Brushed cabinets show brush marks under kitchen lighting, which is the single most common reason a DIY cabinet job looks like a DIY cabinet job.

Curing before reassembly

Cabinet enamel needs time to harden properly. Reassembling and loading a kitchen too early is how fresh finish gets marked before it has cured, so the schedule allows for it.

What goes wrong when it's done cheaply

Cabinets fail for two reasons: grease that was never fully removed, and a finish that was brushed on or rushed back into service before it hardened. Both show up within weeks, and both are avoidable with time that a cheap bid does not include.

How long does cabinet refinishing take?

4. If HOA approval applies, we quote from your community's approved palette.
